The Gnarled Tree

Winskill Stones, Yorkshire Dales National Park

I have been a commercial photographer for nearly 20 years, I became a photographer because I loved the immediacy of being able to be creative and capture a scene or composition and see it straight away using a digital camera and then enhancing/adjusting it using the relevant software. I found that when I started Photographing for clients professionally, I was always bound by “the requirements of the brief” ..and rightly so you might add!!. It feels like the more I have had to stick to “the brief” the less creative I have become.

This year I made a promise to myself that I will take a step back from the commercial mindset of photography and regain that spark of creativity. Taking time out of hectic everyday family life and make an effort to get out with my camera and start taking pictures freely….I will use this space as an opportunity to post my efforts and reignite that tiny spark….

Limestone pavement on White Scars with Ingleborough beyond.

limestone is one of the most beloved of rocks. Sort after by Quarrymen for centuries, cavers and potholers bewitched by the challenges of its underground labyrinths, climbers persevered on its breathtaking and dangerous routes, all the while photographers perched, waiting, watching for that perfect moment…

Passionate about Products

A passion for delivering products in a different way!! A brief insight into this test image I created based around the Absolute Vodka Brand for an Alcohol based advertising product image. This shot had been well over ten years in the making. I had originally capture all of the strawberry elements years ago, dropping them into a water tank and capturing the bubbles that formed after the initial splash. I was so pleased they started to resemble fish and took on a life of their own. It wasn't until years later that I had the idea of combining it with a product to bring the whole thing to life and give it a new meaning and sense of place.

How do you Choose the best photographer for your photographic or video project??

“In recent times, in my personal experience I have found we are all bound by the concerns of our own financial constraints. This has definitely spilled over and had an impact within our creative industry. Budgets have had to be stripped back, funds available limited by global pressures or increased shipping costs. Maybe some projects cancelled altogether and placed on hold until the next yearly review. So when the green light is given and you can finally go about choosing the right creative photographer or videographer for the project brief, it is all the more import to find the right fit creatively for the requirements and not who you may perceive to be the most cost effective. Depending on your project, you should be looking for someone who can demonstrate through their previous work or portfolio that they have the skill sets required and also a style that you think aligns to your brand and could benefit your requirements. Not only that, you need to be realistic with the funds available. So many times I have seen projects not meet their full potential because of misplaced priorities or cost cutting having detrimental impacts on the final results.”
